Self-Defense against a Shoulder Grab

To celebrate International Women's Day, I thought it would be a good idea to start vlog posts on basic self-defense techniques.

The attacker comes to grab my shoulder. I turn to face him with my hands up, push his hand off me and kick him in the groin. I finish with a full push, which gives me the opportunity to brace myself, ready to fight - but in reality, I would run (which is what I advise my students).

It doesn't always work in this order. If the attacker's grip is strong, I would kick before I brush his hand away. (You would feel the strength of the grip on your shoulder.) The kick then serves not only to inflict injury, but to "loosen" the attacker's grip. Striking techniques are almost always included in self-defense techniques or bunkai against grabs, to loosen the attacker's grip and increase the chance of freeing oneself safely and effectively.

This basic self-defense technique works regardless of which way you turn to face the attacker.

*As with anything combat-related, don't try this at home without proper instruction.

International Women's Day is an important day for our charity partner, Because I Am A Girl (Plan International). I just do my little part to empower and inspire children and teenage girls to "get equal" through martial arts and self-defense, but here are some real trailblazers who are making way for girls to lead.
